Let's Wine about it. Joint pain?

 I drink wine.

Not often but maybe once a week or so I'd have a glass.

Let's talk about the last two times I tried wine.  Both spaced a couple weeks apart.

First; A popular American wine. Delicious.

Next morning it felt like every joint hurt, wrists, knees, ankles, elbows, and I had a headache. So then I was thinking what did I do differently yesterday that makes my joints feel like they're on fire today?

Could it have been those two glasses of wine? I considered it. After all this was alcohol and I usually didn't drink much so was wine the culprit? Could wine have that affect on joints?

Now, at 65, I know my body is a lot different than it was at 25 but my joints were on fire!

Fast forward to this past weekend. I try wine again. But this time the wine is from Italy. Two glasses. Next day; No joint pain, no headaches. Next night I have two more glasses. (Had to finish the bottle, right?) Following day still no pain, no headache.

A while ago someone told me they only drink wine from Italy because American wines give them hangovers. I never really gave her comments a second thought, but now I have to wonder what's in American wine? Or is there a magic something in Italian wine?

Who knows?

Maybe next weekend I'll pick up an bottle of Italian wine and give this experiment another test.

Anyone else try this? What's your wine of choice?

Stay at Home & Depression

Most people get depressed at one time or another in their lives. I used to get it all the time due to a medical issue (hypothyroid & Pernicious anemia) but mostly I'm okay now.
Mostly.
Our house is smallish, but we were looking for another place. Then this virus put the brakes on everything. My business, my house hunting, my life. One thing it did start up again was that old familiar depression. It's not bad, just frustrating. Being stuck in the house feels like the place is shrinking. I imagine the walls closing in. For someone who battles depression on a long term and daily basis I could imagine this period in time could seem unbearable.

Know anyone who battles depression? It's time to check in on them.

And breathe....

We all need to just relax and breathe. Someday we'll be on the other side of this and that's where we need to focus.

The surest way to get out of a hole is to have a dream. That thing you want to do, places you want to go, and thing you've dreamed of creating. No matter how big or small your dream, there there steps you can do now to move you toward that goal.

Today I will trim the tree in the back yard that blocks the light.
Today I will paint a picture.
Today I will sew some masks.
Today I will write a newsletter for my biz.
Today I will....

What will you do today? Make a list no matter how big or small the tasks. Make that list and get stuff done.

And call that friend...

Young Bosses

As we move through life, sooner or later there comes a time when we out age our bosses. Mine is almost 20 years younger. Although there is a broad range of ages in my work place, half the people I work with could be my kids and sometimes its hard not to protect them as if they were my own. I see bright and energetic young women who are working hard to succeed.

Then I see some managers who treat these young women like teenagers and I want to scream. They want to mother them and, hey! Nobody wants their mommy at work. How do I say this without coming across like a mother myself?

I want to see everyone succeed. That's my curse. I believe that when people take a job, they want to do their best. They need to be given tools and encouragement. That the way you speak to someone will go a long way in helping them succeed. What you give out, you get back. This goes for every word and action from the manager.

Tell them they're appreciated and you get someone who wants to work.
Tell them they're not going to make it and you get someone who gives up and fails.

Tell them you know they can take on this project and succeed, and they'll find success.
Tell them you doubt their talent, and you'll find someone who doesn't want to try.

Problem? When you see a manager who doesn't know how to set a team up for success and you'll watch a department fall apart. What do you do then?

Sometimes I wonder if my age shapes my view on all this and think maybe I should keep my opinions to myself. What do you think? Leave it to the young? Or speak up?

What Happened Here?

Sooner or later almost everyone wakes up and thinks, "What the hell happened?"
While out partying, goofing around, raising kids, having a job...Sixty is creeping up and springs upon you with the stealth of a viper searching for prey.

Hello Sixty! I see you creeping around the corner. I'm 58, soon to be 59 in August. Then Sixty will be here.

I view this as a right of passage. I've always welcomed each new decade of my life with enthusiasm. Like a new vision of hope, filled with wondrous experiences. In some ways, the changes are evident.

  • Body changes
  • Style choices
  • The way people view you
The changes in your body creep up slowly. Had a little trouble with your back? Had to hold onto something to stand back up? Need a hoist off he couch?

At almost 60 I look at my high heels and think, why bother? Who the heck am I squeezing my feet into those most uncomfortable shoes for? Certainly not me! Choose the flats!

When you work with a fairly young crowd, my immediate supervisor could be my son, you learn they can see you as a mother figure. Or someone who has no computer experience. The latter can be a problem in today's business world.

So as i gear up for sixty I'd like to know what else is on the horizon? What do you see happening from 50 to 60 and beyond?
